Personal Spotlight: Lifetime Resident Dana Ralph Shares Her Favorite Kent Places

Lifetime Resident Dana Ralph Shares Her Favorite Kent, WA Places.

March 20th, 2015

If you’re attending a city council meeting, nonprofit event or just stopping in at Starbucks, you’re likely to run into Dana Ralph, a lifetime, third-generation resident of Kent. Growing up in the house her grandparents’ built, Dana is a 1989 graduate of Kent-Meridian High School, graduating 25 years after her dad graduated from the same school.

Dana lives on Kent’s East Hill with her husband Shawn and sons Kyle, 18, and Derek, 14. The family is currently hosting an exchange student from Japan who is attending KMHS. In addition to serving as Kent City Council president, Dana owns Advanced Billing Systems, a medical billing company. In business for 19 years, Dana has two full-time employees and two part-time employees, including one from SKCAC. She is also involved in the Kent Auburn Tamba Sister Cities organization, Kent Kiwanis, Kent Drug Free Coalition, Kent Downtown Partnership, Kent Chamber of Commerce, among other government and community organizations.

Dana and her family love Kent because it is a big city with a small town feel, and Dana loves seeing people she knows when goes places in town. She loves that Kent residents have big hearts, giving back to the community in some way.

Dana says Kent has all of the amenities of a big city without the hassles of downtown traffic and parking. She loves Kent’s parks and trails and all of the opportunities for her kids including the Kent Police Youth Board. Here are some of the family’s favorite Kent places:

  • Parks/Trails: Green River Trail; Town Square Plaza, a fun place to see kids playing on a sunny day; Morrill Meadows for the public art; and Clark Lake Park for walking or jogging – a great oasis in the middle of town!
  • Restaurants: Saya’s on 212th where the staff knows their names and favorite dishes, CanAm for pizza, butter chicken and taco pizzas, Maggie’s on Meeker for breakfast with her parents, Airways Brewing & Bistro for happy hour and Sweet Themes Bakery for treats. "The choices in Kent keep growing, and we love to try new things when we get the chance."
  • Recreation: This week Dana and her family are going to ShoWare for a soccer game, Kent-Meridian High School for a play and the Senior Center for a holiday craft show. Her family also enjoys concerts, the Spotlight Series, ShoWare events and performances at the local high schools. "I just love that there are options!"
  • Kent’s Best Kept Secrets: Saturday Kent Farmers Market for its great produce, beautiful flowers and people; free summer concert series at Town Square Plaza and Lake Meridian; and Earthworks Park.

Some of Dana’s thoughts on Kent:

"Kent is not the city you remember. We have grown up! We still have the small farms but there are also global companies calling Kent home. There are options for great performing art and sports. There are places to walk, jog or ride your bike, and now we have a Trader Joe’s! Our warehouses have turned into a center for advanced manufacturing – aerospace components, parts for Navy ships, bicycles, furniture, tea, robotics and rockets! It may sound cliché but I really love Kent. Our residents are amazing and the common theme is this is our home and family, and we need to take care of each other."
